Lean on Me, Through a Carer's Eyes

In Lean on Me, Through a Carer's Eyes, Lorraine Kember, published author and poet, tells her personal story of caring for her husband who was diagnosed with mesothelioma, using poetry and words of wisdom to help guide other caregivers.

Her husband lived two years after his mesothelioma diagnosis and much of the book is dedicated to the anticipatory grief Lorraine experienced, which is the unpredictability of emotions felt when a loved one is diagnosed with a terminal illness, at times feeling grief for someone who is still living. A major concern for Lorraine throughout her experience was ensuring her husband's pain was managed, and she details how she did this. The story also touches on coping with grief after losing a loved one and how she found strength to move on.

Testimonials from Readers:

Dear Lorraine,
It is so hard watching your partner in life slowly deteriorating before your eyes! I still read your book as I feel it's the only link I have with someone else who understands what I am going through. I haven't seen anything like your book anywhere, to people like me it is a shining beacon in a vast ocean. I don't know how many people have requested your book Lorraine all told, but I know I am just one of those numbers who will always be grateful for your deciding to write it all down, pouring out your heart and your feelings which must have been hard, but gratifying, probably not knowing how that courage and determination would eventually be a lifeline to many others like me. You are still my place in the dark I can go to, knowing you will understand every feeling or thought I might have. Thank you Lorraine

Dear Lorraine,
I looked after my dad for 2yrs while he battled cancer. This book would be a great help for me to overcome the hurdle of losing my father. I take my hat off to anyone who has had to endure the pain and hurt of watching someone you love so much suffer. a very special thank you to people like Lorraine for putting books like this out into the real world for people to see.

Dear Lorraine,
I finished your book last night. My thoughts are much the same as yours when you walked this same journey – anticipatory grief – at least I can now know what my mind, body and heart are going thru and I am really going to try to live in the moment and enjoy whatever time we have left as a couple.

Your reflections and poems were sad to read but at the same time a source of inspiration to me. I will reread “Lean on Me” many more times in the months ahead. My sincere thanks and appreciation for sharing your innermost thoughts and struggles in this most special book. I am sure that it has continued to help numerous people fight this cancer battle.

Dear Lorraine,
It was a privilege to read your story, I'm truly in awe of your ability to not only want to, but be able to, share such a personal, honest, heart-warming, tragic, uplifting and touching story. All who read it will be inspired. Thank you. I wish you and your family all the very best, life can bring and hope all you wish, hope and dream for comes true. I think you are a very special person.

Dear Lorraine,
A friend has just given me your book — and she marked the place where she knew I was — and I am just staggered, I could have written that book myself, you say just what I am thinking and feeling in all aspects. I have followed your every feeling, Thank you for having written that book which just says exactly what goes on in a wife's mind and feelings — it is of comfort.

Dear Lorraine,
I sat down to read a few pages of your book. I didn't put it down until I finished reading it. I really appreciated a lot of what you shared. I can identify with much of what you described. For just an hour while reading your book I forgot about myself and thought about other families. I never knew what people went through when they lost a loved one. I never understood. Thank you

Dear Lorraine,
I received a copy of your book “Lean on Me” recently and was amazed at how much your journey and thoughts paralleled my own experience. You expressed much of what I had experienced and have not been able to verbalize to my family and friends who supported me throughout the long period of caretaking. Thank you for writing your book and for the many beautiful poems and thoughts you shared. I am sure I will re-read it many times.
